GCN Drop Box

A second piece of news for today.

I have the pleasure to announce that the GCN now has a Drop Box account.

This means that we have another source for our documents on-line as well as the GCN web site. However more importantly we will be using the Drop Box GCN folder to host all the Newsletters and Monthly Shout Outs.

So for future reference we will not have to send the ever expanding and much
larger (thanks to Chris Hall who is doing a fantastic job) pdf files in messages to clubs, we now only have to send out a link when we have a new publication to tell you all about.

Or even better, why not accept the drop Box invitation that is being sent out to all club contacts, by doing that we get a load more free space so that we can add more content to the folder and look at including photo's of events etc.

This should make life for all the clubs in the network, and the GCN council a lot easier for the future. All I ask of the club contact is to make sure that the rest of your club is given the link so that every member of your club can easily access the GCN folder and its contents.

Happy reading.

Tony.

New clubs in the network for October.

Special announcement time....

A drum roll if you please........

The Gaming Club Network has broken the 100 registered clubs mark! Yay!

We have 101 clubs registered as of the end of October, however I already have three other clubs ready to be registered for the November list.  I had set myself a target of trying to reach the 100 club mark by the end of 2012, so to do it by the end of October is great news, so hopefully I am now hoping to have in access of 110 clubs registered by the end of the year!

New clubs to the GCN:

Dark Worlds Gaming Society based in Fareham in Hampshire.
Lisburn Gaming Club based in Lisburn Northern Ireland.
Southampton Sluggaz based in Southampton.
Trinity Wargames Club based in Taunton Somerset.
York Wargames Society based in York, some of the clubs out there will realise that this is the club that host the Vapnartak show.

Please join me in wishing a warm welcome to all the new clubs in the network.

Happy gaming.

Games Day 2012

I was intending to do a full report on Games Day 2012 held on Sunday 23rd at the NEC in Birmingham.

However as I saw next to nothing of the show, I can only report on the day we had on the GCN stand, so here you go, the GCN day at Games Day 2012 in a nutshell.

Dave Wise GCN secretary and myself arrived at the venue at  just after 7.15am, not a bad trip down from Chesterfield at all, I normally like to leave about 1 1/2 hour for the trip to allow for traffic on the M1/M42, granted you don't get that much traffic on the roads at 6.00am on a Sunday morning, but i have been caught out before with road works etc, anyway I left home for just after 6.00am and was sitting outside the venue doors for 7.15am.

Bek Hawkby from GW was ready and waiting for the volunteers to arrive, and Dave and myself were the first there, so getting registered and getting our wrist bands took a few seconds.  The car was emptied and as we only about 20 to 30 feet form the door the unloading did not take long at all.  We were allocated lass space than we had at Games Day 2011, we only one table with a display cabinet next to the stairs directly below the display of the Ultra Marines. Being as Dave had not brought anything i have the cabinet to myself and so took the opportunity to fill it to bursting point with a selection of 40K Space Marines/Space Marine vehicles, Chaos Marines, Lord of the Rings miniatures and my three fleets for Battlefleet Gothic.  Being as my  Space Marines and my Space Marine armada are painted using the dame colours the display worked quite effectively.

We were set up and ready for business in under an hour, and so had a quick poke around the hall.  I took this opportunity to go and talk to two of the GCN club who were there, well actually one new club, Ammo Bunker South and one old club who fell off the GCN register I have been trying to get back in touch with recently to get them back in the network, The Sutton Coldfield Immortals, so after a brief chat with both clubs and 'borrowing' one of the Immortals committee we had sorted out what had happend and had all the new contact details ready to welcome the club back into the network.

I did get a look round the retail area at 9.00am, and had the chance to chat to some of the GW staff I know who were working up there.  I had been asked by the event manager at Maelstrom Games in Mansfield on the Saturday if I could pick him up a copy of the new hard back tome of the Horus Heresy, Betrayal from the Forge World stand.  I had been working at Maelstrom Games on the Friday and Saturday assisting Battlefront Miniatures to set up and help run the Flames of War 2012 European GT, and as he knew I was going down asked me to pick him up a copy, I wanted to pick up the last Horus Heresy novel along with the new book, which as it turns out apart from a bacon and sausage cob and two cups of coffee, the two books were my only purchase on the day!  Whew got away light this year!

I was back behind the GCN desk by 9.30am as GW let the first of attendees in, so we watched as a huge mass of gamers pretty much jogged across the hall to get the sales area first.  Last year I was halfway up the stairs talking to somebody when GW opened the doors and was very nearly bowled over by the mass of bodies hurtling towards me, so I made sure I was well out of the way this year, as being covered in foot prints did not appeal at all!

First customer on the GCN stand, not counting the Immortal committee member of course, was at 9.45am, pretty early start I thought.  Like last year and the previous year I had spent time on the GCN stand, I had expected a slow start getting busier during the day, boy were we in for a shock.   10.30am time for a coffee break so I went and got Dave and myself a drink, bumping into a few people and have a chat for a few minute catching up.  Dave decided to go for wander at 10.45am while I dealt with the steady flow of people turning up to the stand, from 11.00 to 12.30pm we were inundated with people asking about how to join the GCN, setting up clubs and checking for clubs in their area, it was full on and pretty much no stop.

12.30pm saw a little lull, so Dave nipped off to the crew section to get lunch, as we had been so busy we had already decided that we had to go back to the GCN stand and eat as and when we could in between dealing with inquiries.  That was the problem with only the two of being there, previously we would take shifts, but this was not going to be possible at this show.  Dave re-appeared after about 15 minute sand I went to collect my lunch bag and drink, I needed to get some more water as my voice was starting to get scratchy.  On my way down to the crew section I bumped in to Steve Yates from Warlord Games and had a chat for a few minutes, picked up my lunch nad headed back to the GCN stand.

Only one word describes what happened from 1.00pm to 3.30pm, MANIC, we were blitzed with people asking about joining the network, setting up clubs etc etc etc, I had to have a break mid way through the afternoon as my scratchy voice failed me altogether, fortunately I was well looked after by GW staffers who made sure I had plenty of water to drink to keep me going.  My throat was raw at the end of the day, however my wife found it quite funny, so I suppose it was not all bad.

Based on my experience on being on the GCN stand, this was the busiest I had ever seen it.  If all, the people we spoke to follow thorough we will be having  a major boost of clubs into the network.  So I for one and looking forward to the next few months to see where we go based on Games Day 2102.

Was it worth the GCN being at Games Day, a resounding yes, granted I had to up for 4.45am and I was so tired I hit my bed at 8.45pm and stayed there until 8.30am Monday morning!!!

No pictures of Games Day, I did take my camera, but never had time to take it out of the bag, let alone take pictures of anything, and even stranger both Dave and myself were asked to sign copies of the latest White Dwarf by some attendee's, ah fame at last!  : )

To follow up Sunday I spent most of Monday e-mailing the new contacts, I also had the PLI renewal notice to write up as the renewal cost for the 2012/2013 period only came in late Thursday afternoon, however as I was out assisting Battlefront Miniatures most of last week and Saturday, Monday morning was the first opportunity to get it sorted and sent out to all the clubs in the network.

Roll on Games day 2013.....

Tony.

PLI renewal.

Hello all clubs.
Apologies for the lateness of this renewal notice, unfortunately I did not get the details of the renewal cost myself until late last Thursday afternoon last week.  However I was out assisting Battlefront Miniatures most of last week and on Saturday getting set up and ready for their European FoW GT, and I was at Games Day on Sunday.  So this has been the first opportunity I have had to get the renewal notice written up and ready to be sent out.
Please find attached the renewal notice details for your clubs PLI cover for 2012/2013.
If your club does not have cover through the GCN then please ignore this notice, however has your club filled in the Annual Return that you were sent out a couple of weeks ago, that needs to come back to me ASAP with your annual subscription of £20.
If your club is one of the several clubs who has already paid for next years cover along with interim cover, again please ignore the renewal notice.
Your club can pay by cheque or postal order, details of how and where to send the payment are included in the notice.  Please DO NOT send cash in the post.
Alternatively for the first time we can accept payment using Paypal, although you will need to contact me directly for the account details and for the special instructions so we do not end up paying fees to Paypal, again instructions are included in the notice.
If for any reason you have not recieved this message then contact me ASAP.
I look forward to hearing back from you in due course.
Very best regards
Tony.

An afternoon out at Steel City Wargamers

I had a nice afternoon out today with one of our member clubs,  Steel City Wargamers in Sheffield.  I had been invited along to attend their very first 40K tournament.  Unfortunately I was not able to go all day as I had urgent duties at home in the morning, this included trimming the trees and hedges in the front garden before the wet weather reappeared on Sunday, or at least the wife told me it was going to rain!  That said gardening duties completed by mid day it did get me a pass out for the rest of the day.

I was made really welcome at the club, they are a nice friendly bunch of gamers and its nice to see the club steadily growing and increasing in numbers.  As previously mentioned this was the clubs first attempt at running a tournament, and it was a huge success by the looks of it.  Granted numbers are quite limited due to the size of their venue but they had something like 24 eager 40Kers battling away for the top prize, it was looking like the Necrons would prove victorious when I had to leave, about half way through the last game.

The club are looking to do more tournaments in the future, with a WFB event planned for later in the year and possibly 40K and LotR doubles in the near future, more on that later.  I asked one of the committee to write up an 'after action' report on the day and send it and a few pictures and this will be featured in either the next GCN newsletter or in one of the monthly 'shout outs', so keep an eye out for that, this may well spur other clubs into sending in battle reports or event reports.  We are eager to feature what our member clubs have been doing as well as advertise and promote their events throughout the network.

A big thanks to all the members of Steel City Wargamers for the invite and making me feel so welcome.

Tony.

Triples show 19th & 20th May 2012, a brief review of the weekend.

Well, another Triples show has come and gone, held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this is the third year that Triples has been held in this venue. For those that do not know Triples is a long running show hosted by the Sheffield Wargames Society over a weekend, it used to he held at the University of Sheffield but moved to a more suitable venue three years ago.  I first attended Triples as a dealer way back in 1994 when I was in the trade.  The EIS is airy light and easy to get round, with good parking and easy access to the M1 and road/rail/tram links.

The main reason the show is held over a weekends is because of the tournaments, there were at least three running, for ancients, in various scales, and its hard to do that with a one day show.   Plenty of traders attend this show and if I am not mistaken this is the quite possibly next largest UK show after Salute.

Plenty of traders usually means a hammering for the wallet, however being as I had thinned out my painted 40K models earlier in the week, either never used or no longer wanted, I stuck several lots in the 'bring and buy'.  I sold everything I took except for one fully painted Chimera tank, and then proceeded to blow all of my loot, so I came home happy as selling the 40K models allowed me to buy a lot more 15mm Flames of War scenery, buy some of the new M36 tank destroyers and a 155mm heavy artillery box set (out of the bring and buy at a really good price), to fill out my US army which is part built and ready to be painted, along with some more KR Multicase boxes for storage at home and a few blisters of Gerry Anderson themed 28mm figures from Crooked Dice.

I was attending the show with Dave Wise, COGS Chairman, and the new GCN secretary.  We were there over the weekend running a participation game that we have devised and written.  This is a small scale rule set initially called 'Blood Feud' set in the Victorian era and features various factions of mutants, monsters, manics, circus freaks, vampires and fairy tale characters in teams dueling it out in an arena for supremacy.  Its a bit like fight club for lunatics, its fast paced and great fun to play.

We had four 2 foot by 2 foot arena boards sets up and we were kept pretty busy all weekend, we had another of our club mates Terry help us out again and he did a stirling job, running several games each day for us, at several points over the weekend we had all four boards in action at the same time, which kept us on out toes.

Although I kept nipping off at various points over the weekend and donning my GCN hat to go talk shop, as well as to keep going shopping of course, a good result though, I can very happily report that we have one old GCN club coming back into the fold and I spoke to a couple more clubs who are considering joining the network, so all in all not a bad weekends work.

The icing on the cake though came right at the end of the weekend, two GCN clubs took the honours for best participation games at the show.

My own club COGS was presented with 1st place with our Blood Feud game, which came as a complete surprise, although as mentioned the game was very popular with attendee's, and to complete the double with 2nd place a new club to the GCN who only joined the network in April, Heathens and Peasants from Doncaster running a 28mm wild west game.  So well done to them and a really good result for GCN clubs.

All in all a really good weekend, and a show to look at coming to in 2013 if you have never been before.

Salute 2012 update

Salute 2012, all I can say about my day on the GCN stand was WOW! what a day, my feet have just about stopped aching!!!

As Dan mentioned we spoke to a few GCN clubs that had dropped off the radar over the last couple of years who are looking to come back into the system, which is great news. As for new club contacts, I was speaking to loads of potential new clubs, not sure how many though as I lost count around 15! Dan will have spoken to others while I was busy, so we will have to have a chat at the AGM to see exactly how many new contacts we think we made. Dan was kept busy dealing with companies that came to have a chat or make themselves known to us, so all in all we had a really busy day.

When I say busy, I really do mean busy, I lost over two and a half hours at one point, I needed a drink and checked my watch, the time was 11.10am, then people turned up at the stand, when I finally had a free moment when it went a bit quiet, I had another drink and checked my watch again, it was 1.55pm, the time had just gone in a flash, I could not believe it. I am not complaining though as this is exactly what we wanted. So that is looking really good if all of the clubs keep up the impetus and send us their applications, our club list will get a really good boost.

Another plus for the show, the GCN Club Guide went down a storm, I took just a few short of 400 copies, Dan took a small pile back with him, however when I counted up packing them away at home, realised that we had used around 300 copies.

Salute, it was a good show, apparently 1100 more through the door compared to 2011, plenty to do and see, and spend your money on!

I was nice to catch up with some old GCN faces too, Mike Sharpe & Dave Wilkin stopped by to say hello, Ian Handerson and his wife Colleen made it up from Cornwall, and I managed to put faces to several people I have been dealing with over the last few weeks, far to numerous to mention you all, you know who you are and it was a pleasure to actually meet you all in person.

Right onwards and upwards, work to do, get prepped for the AGM this weekend and get ready for the Triples show in Sheffield over the weekend of 19th & 20th May.

Due to the recent retirement of Laurie Stewart the GCN Vice President, and the sudden unexpected resignations of both the Club Coordinator Stuart Mackaness and Secretary Gareth Watson, Dan, Steve and myself have been finding it difficult to reply to messages, queries and applications in as timely a fashion as we would have liked.

Any club that has sent in requests for information, annual returns, application forms or other documentation and have NOT as yet received a reply will need to contact us so that we are able to chase up and deal with your request, so please feel free to contact myself and I will do what I can to assist you.

On behalf of the GCN council I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to our existing members clubs and the new clubs applying for membership. Hopefully we will be able to replace the council positions shortly and get back to normal in the very near future. Until then please bear with us and we will deal with you as best we can. Thank you for your understanding.
